๐Ÿงญ Your step-by-step guide

The Expat Roadmap to a stress-free move.

Everything you need to set up life in the Netherlands, in the right order and in clear English โ€” from securing a home before you land to connecting your internet once you're settled.

Step 1.1 โ€” Secure a home before you land

Goal: Have a roof over your head before your flight lands. A rental first gives you time to find your longer-term home.

Action: Hire a rental makelaar (agent) as your eyes on the ground, and use video-call viewings to walk through properties remotely.

Why: Demand is high โ€” it can take months to find a place, so start early.

Step 1.2 โ€” Open a digital bank account

Goal: Be able to pay for transport, groceries and deposits the moment you land. Many non-Dutch cards don't work in local stores, and credit cards often aren't accepted.

Action: Once you have a signed rental contract, open a Wise or Revolut account using your new Dutch address. Use the digital card with Apple Pay or Google Wallet; order a physical card to arrive around your move-in date.

Why: You can use it for your OV-chipkaart and pay via iDEAL online before you even board your flight.

Open a Wise account
Step 2.1 โ€” Arrival & BSN registration

Goal: Get your BSN (Citizen Service Number) โ€” your legal ID in the Netherlands.

Action: Attend your pre-booked appointment at the Gemeente (municipality) with your signed rental contract. Usually you book a slot via their website's registration / inschrijven page. Some cities, like Amsterdam, have a dedicated English first-registration page.

Why: You need this number for everything โ€” salary, health insurance and banking.

Find your local Gemeente
Step 2.2 โ€” (Optional) Apply for an OV-chipkaart

Goal: Seamless travel across Dutch trains, buses, trams and metros.

Action: Apply for a personal OV-chipkaart online. Unlike the anonymous blue cards sold at stations, the personal (yellow) card lets you add discount subscriptions and auto-reload from your bank.

Why: Without a subscription you pay full price every trip. A personal card can carry an off-peak discount that pays for itself quickly.

What you need:

  • A clear passport-style digital photo to upload
  • A Dutch or SEPA IBAN to pay the application fee and for auto-reload
  • A Dutch address โ€” the card arrives by post in a few working days
Apply on ov-chipkaart.nl
Step 3 โ€” Register for your DigiD

Why: Think of DigiD as your digital passport for the Dutch government. Without it you're locked out of almost every online administrative task.

How: Apply at digid.nl. You'll receive an activation code by post at your registered address within a few working days.

Go to DigiD.nl
Step 4 โ€” Register for health insurance

Why: You can't register with a Dutch GP (huisarts) without an insurance policy number.

Deadline: You have 4 months from registering at the Gemeente to take insurance.

The backdate rule: Even if you wait, the insurer charges you retroactively from your registration date โ€” so it's better to sort it on day one.

Compare & choose your insurer
Step 5 โ€” Register at a local doctor (huisarts)

Why: In the Netherlands you register with a GP before you actually get sick.

When: Right after you have your health insurance.

How: Search ZorgkaartNederland.nl or "huisarts" + your postcode, check whether they're open for new patients, then call or visit to sign up.

What you need: Your BSN and your health insurance card / number.

Step 6 โ€” Open a Dutch bank account

Goal: Open a local bank account.

Action: Use your BSN to open an account with a bank such as ABN AMRO or ING.

Why: You'll need a local IBAN for your phone contract, utilities, and Tikkie payments.

Step 7 โ€” (Optional) Global money transfers

Moving your savings to a new country can be stressful. While apps like Wise are great for smaller amounts, a specialist currency broker can help with larger transfers โ€” you get a dedicated account manager to guide you when moving significant capital to your Dutch account.

Step 8 โ€” (Optional) Buying a home & insurance

Goal: Move from renting to owning.

Action: Consult a mortgage advisor and a buying agent (aankoopmakelaar) to navigate the bidding process.

Why: You can't finalise a home purchase without valid insurance in place, and the market is complex โ€” a professional broker helps you avoid costly mistakes.

Step 9 โ€” (Optional) Internet & TV

Pick a provider: Compare providers in your area and check availability.

Order online: You'll need your BSN and a Dutch IBAN. Most contracts run 12โ€“24 months, but you can usually cancel after the first year with one month's notice.

Install: Most providers send a self-install plug-and-play kit; you can request a technician at checkout, sometimes for a fee.
