How to Effectively Read Your Dutch Energy Meters and Save on Annual Bills

Understanding your energy meters in the Netherlands is essential for managing your utility costs and avoiding an unexpectedly high annual bill, the Jaarrekening. Most households find their meters in the meterkast — that small closet usually right behind your front door (or in the communal hallway in apartments). Here's how to master it.

Identifying your meter

• Analog meter (rotating disk): an older style with a spinning metal disk and dials you read left to right. Increasingly rare.
• Digital meter: shows consumption on a small screen, often cycling through codes or tariffs. You may need to press a button to cycle readings.
• Slimme meter (smart meter): a modern digital meter that sends data to your provider automatically. Still worth checking regularly to verify accuracy.

Electricity codes and tariffs

• T1 (off-peak), code 1.8.1: the cheaper rate, usually nights and weekends.
• T2 (peak), code 1.8.2: the more expensive weekday-daytime rate.
• T3 / T4 (solar return), codes 2.8.1 / 2.8.2: track electricity you feed back to the grid if you have solar panels.

Note: in some regions like Brabant and Limburg, off-peak starts at 21:00 instead of 23:00. Record the numbers under each tariff separately.

The gas meter

Gas is measured in cubic metres (m³). The meter shows a series of numbers, usually without decimals — record only the whole numbers, ignoring anything after a decimal or in red. You can identify it by the connectors on top where the gas pipes attach.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Including numbers after the decimal point or red digits (they're not used for billing).
• Mixing up tariff codes (T1, T2, etc.).
• Not reading regularly, which forces reliance on estimates.
• Confusing gas (m³) and electricity (kWh) meters.
• Mixing up the water meter — often a round brass dial on the floor, also in m³ — with the gas meter.

1. Use energy-efficient appliances.
2. Monitor your usage to spot patterns.
3. Switch off and unplug unused devices.
4. Consider renewable options like solar panels.
5. Review and compare your energy provider regularly — switching can save money.
